Arizona Game and Fish personnel recently completed an electrofishing survey at Canyon Lake, shocking a total of 24 sites and catching 1,899 fish. The crew caught quite a few football-size largemouth bass along with a number of large bluegill. The largemouth bass population looks very healthy, with the largest measuring roughly 24 inches and weighing a little over 8 pounds. The catch rate for largemouth bass was more than 72 bass per hour.
The biologists also caught yellow bass, redear and green sunfish, tilapia, carp, goldfish, and shad (threadfin and gizzard). One interesting thing they found during the survey was that five of the electrofishing sites were over recently installed fish habitat. These sites all had catch rates of more than 210 fish per hour overall.
