Prolonged drought conditions have resulted in drastically reduced reservoir levels at Lahontan State Recreation Area.
Due to low water levels, boating is not advisable and swimming access may be difficult in most areas. The Silver Springs side of the park does not have any swimmable water. In addition, visitors should use caution while driving, as areas of deep sand and mud are present, and the top layer may look dry while the layers below remain wet.
A below average snowpack this past winter led to reduced stream flows in the Carson River, causing a reduction in available storage water for the reservoir. Lahontan Reservoir levels have already dropped below minimum pool levels, which is roughly 5,000 acre-feet of water. The reservoir is not expected to see a significant gain in water level until this winter, unless we experience a rainy October and November.
