Steelhead anglers on the Feather River are finding decent action in town, reported Craig Bentley at Huntington's Sportsman's Store in Oroville. Bentley fished the riffles near Centennial Plaza and Bedrock Park, and hooked a couple of steelhead in both spots. The water has cleared to a light green, and is between 47 and 49 degrees in the low flow section. Cloudy weather and warmer air temps have started some blue wing olive, or small baetis mayflies to begin hatching. Use small size 14 to 16 nymphs, like pheasant tails or birds nest flies. Also productive have been nightcrawlers, eggs, glo-bugs and small spinners fished on four to six-pound line. Berkley Gulp! Trout worms have been effective baits in pink, rigged on a small jighead or drifting style. Last week on the Feather, the average steelhead was two to three pounds, with some fish up to six pounds, and an occasional larger adult to 12 pounds being hooked. The steelhead fishing below Highway 70 has been slow, as most of the fish are moving upriver quickly.
