Plenty of everything was the story at Irvine Lake this week, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The bite on eating-size channel catfish is really good", observed Getty. "Big schools of crappie are showing up underneath boats with floating lanterns, I haven't seen a trout under 3 pounds in a couple of weeks, and the bass are all over the place. About the only thing we haven't seen are any of the monster-size blue cats that live in the lake."
Catfish anglers are scoring limits of 3 to 5-pounders using mackerel, shrimp, and the marshmallow/mealworm combo. Top locations have been the west shoreline, Santiago Flats and Woody's Cove at 5 to 20-foot depths. The whiskerfish are biting best during the early mornings, along with starting at dusk on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
Crappie anglers are mostly using the "light and wait" method. Setting out a floating lantern and waiting for a food chain of insects and baitfish to build up. Crappie are showing up under the lights, but some experimentation may be necessary to find the exact lure they want on any given day. Some crappie can also be caught drifting with afternoon breezes along the treelines at 15 to 20 feet. The slabs are mostly good size, with many ranging over a pound each.
Trout chasers are finding their fish using both troll and bait techniques. Trollers are dragging 3 to 4 colors of leadcore line, trailed by a firetiger or brook trout-color Rapala Jointed J5 or J7, or a cop car-color Luhr Jensen Needlefish. Deep-drifted Power Bait is also getting its share of trout. Only a few trout limits were checked in this week, but all of the fish were beautiful rainbows of 3 pounds or better.
Bass anglers found very good numbers of their quarry. Largemouth ranging from 1 to 7 pounds were biting for both daytime and night-time anglers. Daylight fish were being caught on crankbaits, worms, jigs, and even a few on frogs. Night-time bites were primarily on topwaters like Rapala Skitterpops.
Families with children age 12 and under are finding pretty good numbers of stocked catfish in the Kids Lagoon. The Lagoon is full of juvenile largemouth bass, so please refrain from using worms of any kind as bait there, and gently release any errant bass that may hit on catfish baits.
The water level of the main lake is dropping about 6 inches per week, with a surface temperature in the low to mid-70's. Underwater visibility is up to 10 feet.

6-22-2011The multi-species bite at Irvine Lake has continued well into June, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The catfish are really biting well; we are seeing lots of limits of prime eating-size 2 to 5-pound channel cats", observed Getty. "The crappie fishing also took a jump with the start of our night-time hours, as did the bass fishing. Even the trout have kept on biting, and if you know how to fish a little deeper for trout, you can...... Read More

The annual catfish season opener at Irvine Lake was outstanding, reported general manager Melanie Montoure. "There were lots of very nice stringers of catfish checked in on both Friday and Saturday nights this week. We are looking forward to continuing our evening hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Our weekly stocking of thousands of pounds of prime eating-size 2 to 6-pound channel catfish will continue all summer long, to supplement the already large natural population of both channels and......
