Plenty of channel catfish were on the menu at Irvine Lake this past week, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "the catfish bite has been very good", observed Getty. "We are seeing lots of prime eating-size channel cats, plus a few larger ones. The catfish are hanging near structure and in lakebed depressions at anywhere form 2 to 20 feet."

Most of the catfish on the stringers were 2 to 5-pounders, but some of the whiskerfish exceeded 11 pounds. Hot baits included bonita, mackerel, shrimp, and Gulp! Catfish Dough. Good catches were checked in from Boat Dock Cove, the west shoreline, and Santiago Flats. A few hybrid stripers were caught and released incidentally by anglers targeting catfish.

Bass anglers were present in fairly large numbers, but were extremely secretive. A couple of Daiwa employees were the only ones to break the silence, as they checked in with bucketmouths weighing 10-2 and 6-1. Other information that could be gleaned was that the bass bite was very good for 2 to 6-pound largemouth at depths ranging from 1 to 30 feet on jigs, 10-inch plastic worms, and Carolina-rigged plastics. Some bass are available throughout the day, but the action takes a big jump toward dusk.

Very few anglers made an effort towards crappie, as most were concentrating on the good catfish bite, and the floating crappie lights may spook the catfish. No trout were checked in last week, but lots of bluegill and redear were caught in brushy areas on mealworms and Gulp! Crickets.
