Good overall trout action was found at Irvine Lake this week,. The troll bite was very good, and the fish are cruising the shoreline in the shallows. Boat Dock Cove and Trout Island have been best for shorecasters, with the water at Woody's Cove being a little bit dirty. With the fish still in spawn mode, the feeding behavior is keying on roe colors. Atomic Teasers are working especially well. The trout on the stringers continue to be mostly quality-grade rainbows in the 2 to 7-pound range, mixed in with a moderate number of brown trout and steelhead. A few large 'bows from 8 to 12 pounds kept things very interesting. Good catches of trout by bait dunkers were reported on Power Bait, Gulp!, nightcrawlers and mini jigs. Trollers stayed with firetiger-color Rapala Countdowns in CD03 and CD05 sizes, dragging them at mid-lake and along the west shoreline for best results.
Bass anglers found decent numbers of 2 to 5-pound largemouth. Some bass are starting to move up at Santiago Flats, while others are holding on the deepwater hard structure at the Red Clay Cliffs and Rocky Point. Numbers of bass were reported on dropshot-rigged plastics, jigs, and crankbaits. Some large crappie were also caught incidentally by trout trollers.
The road to Trout Island is open to vehicle traffic, and the Kids Lagoon is a separate entity for families with children age 12 and under. Good numbers of 1 to 3-pound rainbows were caught in the Lagoon. Follow Irvine Lake on Facebook, on the web at www.IrvineLake.net or call 714-649-9111.
